20. BOOKS

A. SIGNED COPY - 25 DE NOVIEMBRE by Ernesto Bazan

Guarantee it now: $120 (donated by David Myers)

This book was possible thanks to a dream my beloved life companion had in 2015 when she dreamed that I could return to the island after a 10-year absence. After having created a trilogy on the subject I'd have never imagined to create a fourth book on the same subject. It has been a magical process to be able to return and feel the place that has changed my life in so many ways. I was ten years older and my vision had changed. The book combines my current way of feeling life before my eyes.

B. SIGNED COPY - Before you grow up by Ernesto Bazan (donated by David Myers) Guarantee it Now: $100

A unique family photo album created by the photographer Ernesto Bazan and many contributions from his parents, his life companion Sissy and their two beloved twin boys Pietro and Stefano. It took Ernesto Bazan 7 years to bring to light this complex book due to my closeness to his subjects: his Sicilian family where he came from and the Cuban/Italian family that with his wife and his twin boys he created. As he wrote: “This book has brought many tears in my eyes in the making. As I said already, it’s a family album that also deals with sickness, sadness, mourning and death, but with an uplifting and positive look at the future, particularly the one of my children now 18, who are beginning their new soulful journey into their adult part of life.” Through drawings, passport images, journal entries, letters, note book insets, memorabilia and intimate color and b&w images we self-published an unusual family album that also deals with sickness, sadness, mourning and death, but with an uplifting and positive look at the future, particularly the one of our young boys Pietro and Stefano, who are beginning their new soulful journey into their adult part of life. Not to be missed!

C. SIGNED COPY With Animals by Willard Pate

Guarantee it now: $90 (donated by David Myers)

Willard has been my most loyal student since we met in Cuba in 2001. I don’t think anyone will ever break her record of twenty six workshops with me. She and I have been friends and have shared many moments in life. None of the above, however, has anything to do with the fact that she has the privilege to be the first of my students to have her beautiful images published by the company I created in 2008 with the help of many of my students, including Willard. Quite simply, the sole reason BazanPhotos Publishing has the honor to publish With Animals is that Willard is a wonderful photographer and her soulful images speak for themselves.

In this arc of time she has managed to chew and digest my lesson and to create a body of work, which reflects her unique way of looking and feeling the world. The photographs in this book are microcosms of our own existence, they are meditations on the life of the animals, on our life as humans, and the life we share together with animals. I’m very proud to share with all of you Willard’s intimate and enduring images. -Ernesto Bazan

D. Show Me the Way to Go to Home       SOLD

by Sandy Sugawara and Catiana Garcia-Kilroy

Guarantee it now: $90 (Donated by Karen Keating)

Show Me the Way to Go to Home is an immersive, visual journey through the incarceration camps that held 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War 2. Photographers Sandy Sugawara and Catiana Garcia Kilroy tell the story of each camp through original and archival photographs, personal stories, and government documents. It’s a frightening tale of a society that failed to protect its vulnerable.

Each camp’s story is printed on exquisite rice paper which is interwoven with dramatic landscapes. The design captures the multilayered feelings of anger, vulnerability, determination, cultural pride, and shared grief of those who lived in these camps. The book also contains an essay by Dr. Donna Nagata, Professor of Psychology at University of Michigan, who has conducted important research on the multigenerational consequences of the race-based incarceration of Japanese Americans. Today’s fragile and disturbing climate of  intolerance makes it all the more urgent that this period of our history not be forgotten.

F. On Photographs by David Campany. Hardback book.

Guarantee it now: $30

In On Photographs, curator and writer David Campany presents an exploration of photography in 120 photographs. Proceeding not by chronology or genre or photographer, Campany’s eclectic selection unfolds according to its own logic. We see work by Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Eggleston, Helen Levitt, Garry Winogrand, Louise Lawler, Andreas Gursky, and Rineke Dijkstra. There is fashion photography by William Klein, one of Vivian Maier’s contact sheets, and a carefully staged scene by Gregory Crewdson, as well as images culled from magazines and advertisements. Each of the 120 photographs is accompanied by Campany’s lucid and incisive commentary, considering the history of that image and its creator, interpreting its content and meaning, and connecting and contextualizing it within visual culture. Image by image, we absorb and appreciate Campany’s complex yet playful take on photography and its history.

G. Eliot Porter In the Realm of Nature by Paul Martineau Hardback book. SOLD

Guarantee it now: $40

Known for his exquisite images of birds and landscape, Eliot Porter (American, 1901–1990) was a pioneer in the use of color photography. His work also became a powerful visual argument for environmental conservation. Trained as a medical doctor and possessing a scientist’s gift for close observation, Porter explored new ways of depicting nature, building blinds in trees so he could study his avian subjects at closer vantage and producing landscape images that capture both pristine forest and ragged river canyons with equal force and brilliance.

Initially encouraged by the groundbreaking photographers Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz, Porter went on to produce a body of work all his own. His 1962 Sierra Club book In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World, with its images grouped by season and accompanied by quotations from Henry David Thoreau, transformed the concept of nature photography books. Ultimately, Porter’s photographs came to the attention of Congress and led to the passage of the Wilderness Act of 1964, the foundational law in wilderness management today.

Eliot Porter: In the Realm of Nature contains 110 images from the collections of Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser at the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas, and of the J. Paul Getty Museum, along with an essay by Paul Martineau that discusses Porter’s life and the innovations he brought to the practice of photography.

H. Psyche, Poems and Pictures by Constantine A. Stratakis and Brenda R. Hanning  SOLD

Guarantee it now: $25

All poems try to capture the beauty or disappointment of the moment, subject, or object,
and the elegance of nature, with its magnificent light, vast mountains, skies, and seas; many
are still photographs of eternal splendour, just like the images in the volume. Constantine A. Stratakis

The photographs in Psyche were drawn from a heightened moment in time when the play of
light, whether morning mists or the sun rising over a Yellowstone river, captured my own
emotional state. Brenda R. Hanning
