“On the Top of the World” Showcases Australian Book Arts
In a partnership with Glen Echo Park’s Popcorn Gallery, Photoworks is currently hosting a distinctive exhibition, “On the Top of the World: Book Artists from Australia.” Curated by Tara O’Brien, a Philadelphia-based book artist, curator, and conservator, the show features books in a range of bound and unbound forms that fold, curl, and hang. “During a recent trip to Australia I was introduced to the community of Book Artists residing on the east coast between Sydney and Brisbane,” says O’Brien. “These artists come to the medium of book art with strong backgrounds in printmaking, paper making and ceramics. Even though many of them work in relative isolation within their own country, there are common themes including the land, ecology and aboriginal people.”
Many of the books incorporate photography in surprising and inspiring ways, which makes the show a must-see for photographers who are considering book presentation of their work. The show opened on November 7 as part of Photoworks’ entry in FotoWeek DC, and runs through Sunday, November 22 at Glen Echo Park’s Popcorn Gallery.
